Literacy Initiative for Today (L.I.F.T.) Program
WELCOME TO THE L.I.F.T. CLASSES at the University of St. Thomas! We are here to help you learn English. We must all work together to make your learning experience a successful one.
PLEASE DO NOT MISS YOUR FIRST CLASS, you risk being dropped from the course.
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your class. Classes begin on Saturday, September 7, 2024, and go to Robertson Hall. Upon arriving:
1. Check the lists located on the wall by door of this office;
2. Find your name on the ALPHABETICAL lists
3. Next to your name you will find your class level and room assignment
4. GO TO CLASS and prepare to learn a lot of English!
Classes will be held in the STRAKE HALL AND ROBERSTON HALL!!! BE AWARE THAT THE CLASSROOM TO WHICH YOU ARE ASSIGNED MAY OCCASIONALLY CHANGE DUE TO OTHER EVENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY. If you do not find your class in the usual room, please ask at the LIFT office. ***Please bring some paper/notebook, a pencil/pen and if possible, an English dictionary. Your teacher will inform you about books on the first day of class.
ABOUT CLASSES:
This is a 11-week, Saturday-only program: Classes begin September 7, 2024 and end on Saturday,
November 23, 2023. In addition to ESL levels 1-8, we offer pronunciation, conversation, writing and TOEFL Preparation.
Each class is 3 hours long. Morning Classes: 9 AM – 12:00 PM
YOUR ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION IN CLASS IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE THAT YOU AND YOUR CLASSMATES RECEIVE THE FULL BENEFIT OF THE PROGRAM. In order to be considered for promotion to the next level, you cannot miss more than (3) three classes. If you have a special situation that will cause you to be late or absent, please let your teacher know. PERFECT ATTENDANCE certificates will be given to those who attend all 30 hours of class.

LIFT PROGRAM – COURSE OFFERINGS
Level 1: Units 1-6 in LifePrints book 1 – introductions, present tense of regular verbs, present progressive tense, simple contractions, Wh- questions, would like + infinitive, giving personal information, giving directions, expressing emotions and needs, pronouns, verb to be, possessives…..
Level 2: Units 7-12 LifePrints book 1 – describing symptoms, identifying parts of body, modals, using how much, dealing with money,prepositions of time, simple past tense of verb to be, describing problems, adverbs of frequency, expressing likes/dislikes, imperatives, nouns: count/noncount, superlatives, comparing/contrasting,….
Level 3: Units 1-6 LifePrints book 2 – asking/answering questions about getting a job, modals can/can’t; positive/negative imperatives, giving reasons/explanations, negative questions, expressing needs, demonstratives, describing problems, regular and irregular past tense, dealing with money….
Level 4: Unit 7-12 LifePrints book 2 – comparative adjectives, following doctor’s directions, asking for information, sequence words, future tense: will, modals, expressing concern, asking for clarification, describing problems, reporting success, adverbs of time, future (going to), past tense vs. past continuous past…
Level 5/6: Units 1-6 LifePrints book 3 – future tense: imperatives, where questions + modals, making small talk, requesting information over the phone, complaining, correcting, adverbs of indefinite frequency, passive voice, reflexive pronouns, following directions, reporting events; verifying & expressing preferences; past tense in time clauses prepositions of time & place
Level 7/8: Endeavor 7 – This course aims to refine and strengthen the English usage skills of advanced students. Topics covered are reading comprehension, pronunciation, grammar, and conversation and writing skills. Activities include reading aloud and discussion of stories and poetry, grammar exercises, student oral presentations to the class, and singing of songs. There are weekly vocabulary quizzes and writing assignments.
Beginner’s Conversation (At Work in U.S.) simple, basic conversation which encourages oral reading and builds pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary proficiency
Intermediate Conversation – Compelling American Conversations textbook includes 15 in-depth, thematic chapters with fluency-focused speaking exercises and short writing tasks; engaging online activities where students "search and share" information from the internet with their classmates. Tailored for adult American immigrants studying English to improve their speaking skills.
Advanced Conversation – Compelling Conversations textbook is an innovative, fluency-focused textbook for advanced ESL students; primarily used in conversation classes, community colleges, adult schools, and private> tutors, thematic chapters with over 1350 questions and 500 memorable quotations and proverbs. Must be level 5 and above to enroll.
Pronunciation –emphasizes speaking, sound discrimination, and standard intonation patterns in American-style English. Perfect for ESL students, TOEFL and TOEIC test takers and all others for whom English is a second language and who want to improve their pronunciation. Must be level 5 and above to enroll
